Critics have given mixed opinions on Chao and their integration into Sonic gameplay, generally praising their worth as a diversion but criticizing Chao minigames' low interactivity. They have also appeared in games outside the series, the Sonic the Hedgehog comics, and the Sonic X anime, as well as being featured in promotions and merchandise.
Most notably, the character Cream the Rabbit has a Chao named Cheese, whom she uses to attack enemies. They usually take the form of digital pets, but have also played parts in the story and figured into other gameplay elements. The Tails Chao is the only Character Chao which can be legitimately obtained with regular copies of the game! The Tails Chao can be obtained through Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II. The majority of these are unobtainable without hacking, and were placed in the game only for these Japanese events. They are also immortal, just like Chaos Chao.

Like all other ordinary Chao evolutions, these Chao are mortal, can die or reincarnate, and can be easily obtained without hacking. These are commonly mixed up with official character Chao, and so it is important to mention this. Many of the final evolutions that are available to Chao also have a striking similarity to characters from the Sonic games or other Sega games. Generally these are just Chao evolutions that start to look like iconic characters, but there are also official Character Chao avaiable that cannot be obtained by normal methods in the Chao garden. Character Chao refer to Chao who resemble characters from the main Sonic and Sega games.
